About Parker:
Parker is a coeducational independent day school in San Diego, California with 1,330 students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. Job Description:
The 6-12 Theater Teacher and Drama Club Technical Theater Director is responsible for teaching three sections of Middle School theater and the technical operations of Parker's Performing Arts Center.
Teaching responsibilities include teaching one section each of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade theater classes, which include instruction in scene study, monologue writing and interpretation, improvisational theater, devised theater, puppetry, technical theater, etc. with the goal of introducing students to the joys and wonders of making theater while also preparing interested students for more in-depth study of theater in the Upper School program.
Technical Theater Director responsibilities include managing all technical theater needs for three mainstage shows each year and various showcases for Middle and Upper School classes, including lighting, sound, projection, set design and construction. The Francis Parker Drama Club is student centered. Therefore, the Technical Theater Director has a responsibility to mentor Middle and Upper school student designers and technicians in production design and technical theater content and skills with the goal of developing a regular working group of students to crew all Drama Club productions.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Operate, maintain and safeguard the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, projections, and communications equipment.
- Maintain the Performing Arts Center in safe running order.
- Mentor 6-12 Drama Club students on the basic creative and technical principles of set, prop, light, sound, and projection design with the purpose of developing student content and skills to the necessary level for crewing performing arts production.
- Collaborate with performing arts faculty (both middle and upper) on all Drama Club presentations and productions.
- Train and supervise the student crew for all drama productions.
- Determine the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, projections, staging, special effects, etc. necessary for events and performances presented in the PAC in advance of production dates.
- Design, set up, maintain, and operate lighting, sound, and projection systems for theatre productions and projects including technical week rehearsals and performances.
- Supervise and assist with design, construction, and management of sets and stages for all performing arts productions.
- Assist in recruiting, training and assigning volunteers, students or paid technical staff for individual shows.
- Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, projections and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Operate various hand and power tools to set up for events; maintain current inventory of supplies and equipment; perform minor repairs to equipment; maintain equipment maintenance log detailing maintenance and repair activities. Collaborate on the annual production calendar.
- Assist with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintain inventory and order specialized supplies.
- Attend technical week rehearsals, in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting the show.
- Make recommendations regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
Qualifications:
Interested candidates should have:
- A degree and preferably a teaching certificate in theater, technical theater, and/or production and design.
- The ability to passionately and effectively teach both Middle and Upper School students
- The ability to serve as an advisor and mentor to Middle School or Upper School students
- A strong and sincere commitment to professional development both in pedagogy and content area
- Multicultural curriculum development and culturally responsive teachingexperience is preferred
- Strong interpersonal and cultural competency skills when working with students, parents, faculty, and School leadership
- High standards and high expectations for students

The successful candidate will have knowledge of the following:
- Coordination, facility use, maintenance and operations of a theater facility
- Budget preparation techniques
- Principles and practices of selecting, training, and supervising student assistants
- Theatrical sound, lighting and projection technology
- Theatrical terminology, stage rigging, scenic construction technology, and theatrical production equipment
- Modern office practices, procedures and equipment
- Operation of a computer and assigned software
- Operation of hand and power tools utilized in the theater
- Record keeping techniques
- Safety standards and regulations
- Proper lifting techniques
The successful candidate will be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods of time
- Reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally
- Arm lift 40 pounds.
- Ability to work at heights
Salary and Benefits:
Parker is committed to attracting and retaining the highest quality faculty and staff through a substantial compensation plan, including competitive salary, TIAA retirement benefits and full medical/dental coverage. Individual salary is negotiable depending on years of experience and educational background.
Salary Range: $80,000 - $120,000 per year
The actual salary will be determined by the candidate’s educational degree and their years of full-time teaching experience. The starting salary listed reflects this position’s minimum experience and educational requirements; the ending salary listed represents the top of the salary structure for this position. Most candidates can expect to enter in the lower to middle section of this salary range, depending on their specific experience and education.
