Session One

Communication Strategies for CFOs and Facilities Directors

In this panel driven session, we will explore strategies to enhance communication between Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) and Facilities Directors. Effective collaboration between these key roles is vital for successful financial planning and facilities management within any school. We will discuss practical techniques for clear and efficient communication, understanding each other's perspectives and priorities, and aligning financial goals with facility needs. Join us to learn how to foster a productive partnership between CFOs and Facilities Directors, ultimately leading to better decision-making and resource allocation.

Session Two

Effective Construction Contracting: Strategies for Success and Sustainability

Heather DeBlanc, Partner, LCW and Christopher Fallon, Partner, LCW


This session will help attendees understand the essential elements of a successful construction project, including contracting with architects and contractors, managing project timelines, and maintaining budget control. Key supporting topics will cover contract negotiation strategies, cost control methods, legal and regulatory compliance, and risk management. Special emphasis will be placed on the unique challenges faced by private schools, such as balancing educational priorities with financial constraints. By the end of the session, attendees will gain the knowledge and tools to effectively manage construction projects, ensuring sustainable, high-quality outcomes with minimal disruption to school operations.

  • Identify key components of successful construction contracts, including critical elements in working with architects and contractors.
  • Recognize effective methods for managing project timelines and staying on budget.
  • Distinguish between standard and custom contract provisions to better negotiate favorable terms.

    Session Four

    Exploring Ways a Learning Environment can Benefit from and Utilize Natural Water Features & Fountainscapes

    James Hiestand, Owner, DreamsScape with guest speaker Craig Fine, Owner/Operator, Water and Wood Fountains

    This session will explore the many ways that fountainscapes and water features can be utilized in learning environments for the benefit of both staff and students. These potent and diverse benefits compel us to consider how to best make use of a water feature in each unique school setting. From improving signage with a waterfall, to creating a courtyard nature pond sanctuary, connecting with natures healing energy in a school setting is a great way to deepen our connection with ourselves and others. Topics to be discussed are:


    -The different types of water features and fountainscapes that can be created.

    -The profound effects of sitting by, seeing or hearing water and what it does for the nervous system, mind body connection, left/right brain balancing and energetic grounding.

    -Where to locate a water feature.

    -Living Water Ecosystems vs. chemically treated water.

    -The importance of planting within and around water features.

    -Various ways fountainscapes and water features can be used as tools for instruction, time outs and rewarding students.

    -Costs, maintenance, liability and challenges.

    Heather DeBlanc, Partner,

    Liebert Cassidy Whitmore

    Heather DeBlanc is the Chair of the firm’s Business and Facilities Practice Group. She practices education, construction, business, contract, and employment law (with an emphasis in benefits), representing both nonprofit and public entity clients. Heather has been practicing construction law for over 20 years, advising clients as to appropriate project delivery methods, contracting, the construction process, and construction disputes. Heather assists project owners in developing and negotiating design professional agreements and construction contract documents. She is adept at identifying and minimizing risk in construction contracts because of her familiarity with the construction process.

    Christopher Fallon, Partner, Liebert Cassidy Whitmore

    Christopher represents schools, community college districts, special districts, independent schools, and nonprofits, focusing on business and facilities matters. He handles vendor and construction contracts, property issues, and business operations. A LEED Green Associate, he is accredited in green building practices and regulatory requirements. Christopher assists clients with business transactions, contract negotiation, and property matters, including vendor, lease, and employment agreements. He has extensive experience in construction issues, advising on contractor, architect, and management agreements. He also supports clients in licensing and operating preschool programs, transitional kindergarten, and appeals related to licensing reports and penalties.

    Craig Fine, Owner/Operator,

    Water and Wood Fountains


    Craig Fine has spent decades working in prominent educational facilities in the Los Angeles area. From 1996 to 2003, he was the Director of Campus Operations at Harvard Westlake High School and then performed the same duties at the prestigious Mirman School for Gifted Children from 2004 to 2014. He has also been the owner/operator of a custom fountain making company called Water and Wood Fountains for 25 years.

    James Hiestand, Owner,

    DreamsScape


    James Hiestand is the owner of DreamScapes Water Features and Landscaping LLC in Los Angeles. For 33 years, he has been designing and creating award winning outdoor living spaces throughout California and Oregon. James’ passion for making Water Features and the Landscapes that surround them is infused into each DreamScape project. Now a Master Certified Aquascape Contractor, James has extensive experience creating Living Water Ecosystem Ponds, Pondless Waterfalls, Recreation Ponds and Fountainscapes along with the Landscaping around them.

    David Marcus, Director of Facilities,

    de Toledo High School



    Prior to working in schools in 2001, David Marcus worked for 15 years in accounting and quality assurance. He was the founding board member of New Community Jewish High School, which has since been renamed de Toledo High School. He was the school’s first business manager and was responsible for a new facility including construction, maintenance, security, and rentals. He is passionate about speaking to schools and other groups on a variety of topics such as institutional security and emergency preparedness, maximizing resources to update, refresh and maintain campus facilities, and creating a profitable, legal, and risk-wise school auxiliary income program.


    Joe Rayburn, Director of Partner Development, Building Solutions


    Joe Rayburn, Director of Partner Development at Building Solutions, is responsible for new sales and business development. He brings over 20 years of sales and business development experience in the A/E/C industry. Having come from a consultative background, he is well-versed in the many facets of delivering complex projects and effectively communicating those solutions to clients. Joe has spoken to varying groups including PAISBOA, Cal-ISBOA, MISBO, TCSA, and NBOA.

    Matt Riddle, Director of Facilities and Capital Planning, Marlborough School

    Matt is the Director of Facilities and Capital Planning at Marlborough School, where he has served for the past 12 years. With over 17 years of experience in independent school operations, he brings expertise in budgeting, plant management, and culture building. Matt is known for his strategic approach to campus planning and his commitment to fostering strong, mission-aligned teams. He is also an active board member of Cal-ISBOA, contributing to the advancement of business operations across California’s independent schools.

    Julia Yzaguirre, CFO,

    Turning Point School



    Julia Yzaguirre has spent nearly 30 years in independent schools, currently as the CFO at Turning Point School. Julia also served as the CFO at The Center for Early Education for four years and spent 17 years running Marlborough School's Business Office. She has consulted in various independent schools throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties in Business Office structure, risk management assessment, and as interim CFO. A CPA by trade, Julia received her BA in Economics, with an emphasis in Accounting from UC Santa Barbara, and earned her CPA while working at Deloitte & Touche.
