Founded in 1911, Berkeley Hall School is a Nursery through 8th grade non-sectarian, independent school in Los Angeles, California. The Human Resources Specialist is responsible for providing general direction and oversight with respect to personnel management, recruiting, compensation and benefits administration, and performance management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Personnel Management
- Ensure regulatory compliance with Federal, State, local agencies for employee relations, recruitment activities, required trainings, mandates, benefits, etc.
- Annually review and make recommendations to the Controller, CFO, and Head of School for improvement of the school’s policies, procedures, and practices on personnel matters.
- Coordinate, update and disseminate Employee Handbook information annually, and as needed.
- Provide strategic direction and overall guidance with respect to performance management standards and evaluation processes.
- Develop and maintain a human resources information system (HRIS) that meets School personnel information needs.
- Complete employment verifications and participate in external surveys in all areas of HR, including compensation, benefits and trendsetting.
- Assist with exit interviews, severance agreements, terminations, and performance improvement plans, consulting with legal counsel on sensitive matters.
- Provide support and guidance to the Controller, CFO, and Head of School with regards to legal personnel issues.
- Partner with and support supervisors on employee conflicts within the parameters of school policy as specified in the Employee Handbook.
Benefits Administration
- Assist employees with benefits resolutions regarding claims or coverage.
- Partner with the Controller to coordinate the annual open enrollment meeting with the insurance broker to communicate benefit programs and deliver information and materials to employees.
- Back up liaise to the Controller between the vendor, investment broker, retirement committee, and employees regarding the 403(b) retirement program.
- Coordinate with the appropriate state agencies regarding disability, unemployment, workers compensation, and leaves of absence.
- Manage Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliance, recordkeeping, and notices in conjunction with the payroll vendor.
Compensation Administration
- Generate employment contracts annually and mid-year as required for employment changes, including Afterschool and Summer program teachers.
- Manage and distribute letters of offer or employment agreements.
- Work with the Controller to maintain salary data for budgetary, DASL and Cal-ISBOA reporting, and forecasting purposes.
Recruiting and Onboarding
- Coordinate with search firms or other recruitment sites to assist the Administration in identifying appropriate candidates for each open position.
- Schedule and oversee candidate interviews and school visits.
- Provide guidance and training to employees with regards to conducting legal, appropriate, and effective interviews.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive and effective onboarding process upon hiring, including employment agreements, benefits enrollment, health screening, and required compliance verifications.
- Work with Administrators to develop an employee orientation program for all newly hired employees.
Payroll and General Duties
- Collaborate with the Controller in processing payroll semi-monthly.
- Monitor employee timecards to ensure accuracy and completion
- Distribute W-2s annually.
- Assist with the collaboration with ADP and other vendors as needed.
Other Duties

QUALIFICATIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required for this position:
- Bachelor’s degree
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of human resources management or customer service
- HR certificate (preferred)
- Independent school experience (preferred)
SKILLS:
- Commitment to BHS diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives.
- Has a working knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Office, and g suite.
- Strong proficiency with HRIS systems, experience with ADP (preferred)
- Strong understanding of ACA rules and regulations
- Experience and applicability of all state and federal regulations including ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, CFRA, and ADA as well as wage and hour laws as they relate to payroll
- Experience using ADP, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Highly organized with the ability to work in a dynamic environment while maintaining keen attention to detail
PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:
- Able to work in a dynamic environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
- Able to lift up to 20 pounds
- Able to climb stairs
- Ability to occasionally walk 60-acre campus
- May work at a desk and computer for extended periods
Compensation: $31.00–$36.00/hour DOE + Benefits
