    DESCRIPTION

    New Roads School provides an inspired college preparatory program from which an authentically diverse student population, mirroring the rich diversity of Los Angeles, develops a personal dedication to learning, a respect for independent thinking, an expanding curiosity about the world and its people, and a commitment to the common good. We are a co-educational, non-denominational K-12 school of approximately 500 students. We pride ourselves on our small class sizes, passionate educators, and dedication to relational, embodied learning. 

    New Roads School is seeking a long-term substitute, part-time 3rd-6th grade Science Teacher who is professional, experienced with a passion for hands-on, experiential learning.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • An understanding of New Roads’ Philosophy and approach to education.
    • A firm commitment to access, equity, and inclusion and working with a    diverse community.
    • Plan and teach hands-on, experiential science classes for grades 3rd-6th
    • Creating age-appropriate science lessons that align with curriculum standards, incorporating effective teaching methods (e.g. experiments, demonstrations, and PBL).
    • Teaching fundamental science concepts in a way that is exciting and accessible to young learners, using visual aids, real-world examples, interactive activities and frequent field trips.
    • Sound knowledge of subject matter, including correct use of science related vocabulary, effective modes of teaching, and help students cultivate their scientific skills as they expand their understanding of the world.
    • Experience and interest in differentiated instruction, project-based, constructivist approach to teaching and learning, as well as authentic, performance-based assessment.
    • Maintaining a positive and productive learning environment, managing student behavior, and addressing individual needs, while communicating high expectations and boundaries in a consistently kind, clear and respectful manner.
    • Cultivate a climate of trust and mutual respect, which encourages students to risk asking questions, expressing their opinions, and making mistakes necessary to the learning process.
    • Provide ongoing and timely feedback to students on their progress towards meeting big goals by frequently checking for understanding via formative assessment, as well as summative assessment.
    • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team, and collaborate with classroom teachers to create interdisciplinary units that teach grade-level content knowledge and skills through Science.
    • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development, and communicate respectfully and thoughtfully with parents/ guardians, remaining sensitive to different families’ cultures, values and needs.
    • Report on student progress in accordance with the school’s reporting guidelines and calendar.
    • Serve as advisor and Service Learning teacher for a cohort of 6th Grade students.
    • Ideal candidates will be excited to become  part of our vibrant school community, broadly engaging with students and colleagues.
    • Participate in department, school, and parent meetings.
    • Some additional supervision assignments required.
    • Other duties as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

    Bachelor degree required in Science or Education.

    Minimum three years teaching experience is required.

    Experience in non-formal, field, or other experiential learning environments preferred.

    Passion for teaching, and understanding of and respect for students’ individual learning styles

    Passion for personal and professional growth as an elementary science teacher

    Solid organization, communication and writing skills.

This is the lowest to highest salary we reasonably expect to pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, performance, and organizational needs.
