Permanent Substitute Teacher

    Primary Responsibilities:  

    The Permanent Substitute Teacher (PST) is a trained educator responsible for teaching K-8 classes, covering duties, and ensuring student well-being when permanent teachers are absent due to professional development or illness. The PST ensures continuity of instruction, supervision, and safety in the classroom and throughout the school.

    Hours/Classification: Full-Time Monday through Friday  (7:45 a.m.-4:15 p.m. with a 30 min. lunch); Non-exempt; In-Person; 10-month position

    Compensation: $30- $35/hr DOE

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Provide classroom and duty coverage for absent teachers (short- or long-term)
    • Teach content and skills in K–8 subject areas, utilizing the Hamlin curriculum and appropriate learning materials
    • Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials as needed in emergency situations
    • Administer or supervise in-class assessments
    • Maintain appropriate daily records (attendance, accident reports, etc.)
    • Communicate with the regular teacher/advisor about the day’s success and report incidents to the division head
    • Maintain standards of student behavior to foster a joyful and productive classroom environment
    • Supervise students outside the classroom (lunch, recess, carpool, fire drills, field trips)
    • When not needed for substitute teaching, proactively reach out to the Program Operations Manager for ad hoc assignments within the school




    Desired Personal Qualities:

    The PST is a steady hand, modeling joy, competency, flexibility, and excellent organizational skills. As a trusted colleague and hardworking team player, the PST partners thoughtfully with teachers and administrators. Comfort with Google Suite applications and Apple hardware/software (MacBooks and iPads) is essential.



    Preferred Professional Skills and Experience:

    • B.A. in Education or a related field
    • 1–2 years of experience working with school-age children in a group or classroom setting
    • Proficiency with Google Suite and Apple devices (MacBooks, iPads)


    Physical Requirements:

    • This position is 100% on site.
    • Ability to lift and carry packages and equipment up to 25 lbs.
    • Ability to walk, stand, and perform physical tasks throughout the day.
    • Demonstrate normal depth perception 
    • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, operate standard office equipment, and use a telephone 
    • See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids 
    • Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone with or without auditory aides 


    Work Authorization Requirements

    • Clear the Department of Justice background screening (Livescan) 
    • Authorized to work in the United States (I-9)
    • Provide health (TB) clearance (an update is expected every four years)

    • The work environment characteristics are representative of those in a normal classroom/school setting that one might encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.     • Work indoors in a standard office environment, computer lab, and/or classroom environment 
    • Some exposure to childhood and other diseases in a school environment 
    • May be required to work outside of typical work days and office hours to meet operational deadlines
