High School Theater Arts Teacher & Production Manager

    San Francisco Waldorf High School is seeking a dynamic Theater Arts Teacher/Production Manager to join its faculty for the 2024-2025 school year. This position offers a unique opportunity to direct plays and musicals as well as teach Drama classes. The Drama teacher will help students as both individuals and groups, will foster an appreciation of Theatre, and provide a joyful and supportive learning environment for dramatic development. We seek to provide meaningful drama development for our students. Candidates should be energetic, collaborative and interested in leading a department.

    Summary and Qualifications:

    The ideal candidate has high school teaching experience as well as knowledge of working in performance skills building and theater production, as well as a background in stage directing. There are 2 productions to put on per year, as well as four blocks of theater classes/ acting electives to be taught during the school day. The ideal candidate can also co-direct, envision and help build the set and general aesthetic of the show with help from students and parents/guardians. 

    Teaching Requirements

    • Design and implement creative pedagogy with instruction that values a hands-on, collaborative, project-based curriculum & methodology
    • Design and deliver engaging and rigorous curriculum for theater classes
    • Incorporate theoretical concepts, practical skills, and experiential learning opportunities
    • Use appropriate technology to support and differentiate instruction
    • Provide strategic direction and leadership for the theater arts, including, curriculum development, production planning, departmental initiatives, and ensuring the organization and safety of productions and their materials

    Directorial Requirements

    • Direct and oversees 2-3 theatrical productions, including show selection, casting, rehearsals, choreography, music, set design, and technical coordination
    • Ensuring that all the moving parts come together, including load in and load out
    • Provide guidance, feedback, and support to students participating in theatrical productions and enrolled in theater classes
    • Foster a culture of creativity, collaboration, and mutual respect with a high degree of professionalism

    Capacities & Knowledge

    • Knowledge of a variety of instructional methodologies related to drama
    • Teach acting principles to students, and provide formalized instruction on performance
    • Ability to teach drama content, concepts and techniques
    • Maintains best professional practices in communicating with peers, students and parents/guardians
    • Preparation for classes, including supervising student clean-up of the classroom as necessary
    • Willingness and ability to create and build upon current theater class syllabi
    • Take daily attendance and provide a narrative evaluation and grade for each student at the end of the block. The narrative evaluations and grades are to be submitted online, according to the schedule provided by the registrar twice per year. 
    • Submit expenses according to the purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Attach all receipts to a check request form and submit it to the High School Chair before turning it into the Business Office for reimbursement. Check request forms are available in the high school office.

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Degree in Theater Arts, Drama Education, Performing Arts, or related field.
    • Previous experience in theater production and directing, preferably in an educational setting.
    • Strong understanding of theater techniques, production processes, and theater curriculum development.
    • Passion for inspiring creativity, promoting artistic excellence, and nurturing talent in young performers.
    • Ability to effectively manage a budget
    • High school teaching experience, preferred
    • Intellectually curious and willing to grow professionally
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, students and staff

    Benefits & Compensation:

    This is a part-time, non-exempt, hourly position (30-40% FTE). It carries no benefits other than those available through the San Francisco City Ordinances. The compensation for this position is $64 - $68 an hour depending on experience.

    This position does not continue during the summer break months.  School breaks and Holidays are unpaid.

    Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

    • Be able to occasionally lift to 30 lbs.
    • Regularly sitting or standing 4-8 hours
