    A successful Biotechnology Technician and Biology Laboratory Manager will have a meticulous approach to scientific work, the ability to organize a complicated schedule that supports multiple lab science courses taught by different teachers, and collaborative spirit with colleagues.  

    We are looking for a qualified individual to support a biotechnology research course, an advanced topics in (AT) biology course, and core biology courses during the academic year, from August 1 through June 15 working a  minimum of 24 hours per week. Weekly hours can be variably distributed during the work week and school day depending on lab schedules and other science department demands.  There are some weekends when support is needed, typically in the spring semester. 

    This is a non-exempt, hourly position, and it is eligible for benefits.

     Responsibilities Include:

    • Daily preparation of reagents, setting up, taking down, and hazardous waste management of labs for Biology, AT Biology, and Biotechnology classes following established safety expectations during all phases

    • Daily communication with Biology, AT Biology and Biotechnology teaching teams to coordinate lab work,  translating work into an actionable schedule

    • Anticipating material needs, procuring reagents and live animals, equipment, tracking and receiving (sometimes perishable) shipments.

    • Monitoring safety implementation during labs, working with teachers to improve safety and adhere to set standards and best practices, especially with regard to chemical use

    • Keeping records of lab setups and stations and notes on areas for improvement, filming lab protocols and demonstrations as needed

    • Overseeing independent student work in biotechnology research in the Spring semester on weekends and during school breaks

    • Supervising students during lab, including makeup labs for students who miss class, monitoring lab safety as well as successful execution of experiments

    • Staining and photographing DNA gels and processing associated data outside of class time 

    • Maintaining bacterial and mammalian cell frozen stocks of cells and documentation

    • Testing reagents for labs

    • Devise, review, update and implement departmental wet lab chemical safety training

    • Substitute for and support lab manager with Chemistry class prep when the lab manager is absent or there are quick changeovers of labs and workflow demands extra personnel

    • Teaching students safe and effective cell culture techniques is a plus



     Qualifications:

    • Minimum High School diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or related field is desired

    • Successful completion of and strong understanding of college level Biology and Chemistry coursework

    • Experience in mammalian cell culture preferred 

    • Experience with proper handling of chemical and biological hazardous materials required

    • Experience with bacteriological sterile technique and molecular biological techniques required

    • Experience managing scientific lab resources preferred

    • Experience in purchasing and reconciling receipts would be helpful

    • Experience in keeping records and documenting work in a scientific laboratory environment required

    Pay range:


    In the spirit of pay transparency we share the base salary range for this position: $40 - $55 per hour. Base pay is exclusive of fringe benefits, retirement plan employer contributions or potential stipends (for eligible employees). Pay ranges at Menlo are reasonable estimates of what the School anticipates paying for a role but are not guaranteed. If hired at Menlo School, your final base pay will be determined by factors such as skills, education, experience, job level, part-time status and number of months of work per academic year. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity with our current employees as a part of any final offer. Please keep in mind that the generous range mentioned above is the full base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range is not typical for Menlo School in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.
