    Campbell Hall, founded in 1944 and situated on a 15-acre campus in Studio City, California, is an independent, all-gender, college preparatory, Episcopal day school for students in kindergarten through grade twelve.     THE ROLE 

    The Controller is responsible for contributing to the financial health of the school. The Controller will lead accounting, budgeting, tax, audit and financial modeling activities of the organization and will manage all financial and accounting reports, controls, and standards. The Controller ensures accurate and timely financial and statistical reporting and analysis, including financial reports to key staff to enable them to appropriately manage their work and budgets. As a member of the leadership team, the Controller will be involved in strategic planning, evaluation, and professional development initiatives, as well as planning for the organization’s expansion and supporting opportunities to invest in innovation. 

    The Controller will define the process and implement the infrastructure/systems needed to support the organization’s strategic and financial initiatives to meet goals and objectives. The Controller will continue to build and manage effective and streamlined administrative/financial systems, including financial, accounting, and compliance. The Controller will build strong partnerships with faculty, staff, key stakeholders, parents, and vendors. 

    The Controller will report to the Chief Financial Officer and lead a group of 4 team members. 


    CRITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

    • Oversee the finance and accounting operations, ensuring a best-in-class office. 

    • Hire, direct and coach financial team members to ensure timely, proficient, and accurate results – and drive continuous improvement in accounting/ finance processes. 

    • Prepare/review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reporting. 

    • Remain current on audit best practices as well as state, federal and local laws regarding school operations. 

    • Prepare/review audit schedules, tax reports, financial information, KPI’s, budgets, etc. 

    • Provide internal and external financial analysis and reporting as needed – capital expenditures, cost/benefit projects, ROI analysis, special projects, and recommendations. 

    • Manage the capital request and budgeting processes. 

    • Assist in overall treasury management. Establish and maintain relationships with banks investment managers. 

    • Prepare cash projections, manage cash flow planning process, and ensure funds availability. 

    Business Strategy 

    • Serve on and engage the Board’s finance committee, investment committee, and audit committee. 

    • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with the strategic plan. 

    Planning, Policy, and Board Relations 

    • Develop business plans and forecasts in collaboration with senior leadership. 

    • Engage the finance and investment committees to develop financial plans and projections. 

    • Represent Campbell Hall to financial partners including banking, auditors, investment managers, etc. 

    • Meet or exceed audit “best practices,” and state and federal law regarding Campbell Hall’s financial operations. 

    Financial/Operational Management 

    • Oversee budgeting and the implementation of budgets to monitor progress and present operational metrics internally and externally. 

    • Ensure finance staff maintains financial records systems in accordance with GAAP and monitors use of all funds monthly. 

    • Prepare and communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. 

    • Manage cash flow and forecasting, direct all financial, project-based and departmental accounting. 

    • Review all formal finance processes and administration, recommending improvements to the systems in place and managing changes going forward. 

    • Assist in cash management and ensure compliance with the board approved investment policy and investment of short-term funds in accordance with established guidelines and practices. 

    • Manage the annual audit, including the audit committee review process. 

    • Oversee endowment, and long-term investment strategies and monitor long-term investments and investment managers. 

    Accounting and Administration 

    • Oversee accounting staff to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and functions

    • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures. 

    • Guarantee timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for internal managers and for the finance committee; prepare and communicate monthly and annual financial statements. 

    • Coordinate audits and proper filing of tax returns. Prepare all financial statements, including statement of activities, statement of financial positions, cash flows, tax returns, and statistical reports. 

    Administrative Leadership/Management 

    • Serve as a business partner on the organization’s financial, budgeting and administrative processes, including payroll and benefits functions - with a keen eye on continuously developing and improving systems. 

    • Provide support for the Director of Human Resources in employee benefit programs, and payroll. 

    • Serve as the plan administrator for the school’s 403(b) retirement plan. 

    • Partner with CFO to oversee risk management for the school, including the school's business continuity plan, and insurance programs. 

    • Oversee the effectiveness and professionalism of the Business Office team to help create a culture of mutual support and collaboration. 

    ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS 

    • BS in Accounting/Finance/Economics or other related areas required; CPA is strongly preferred. 

    • 5+ years of progressive finance experience; ideally in nonprofit sectors, and/or educational entities; independent schools and auditing experience preferred.

    • Demonstrated leadership, team management and interpersonal skills. 

    • Proficient in database and accounting computer application systems; high level of proficiency in Excel. Experience with Blackbaud financial management software is strongly preferred.

    • Exceptional management and supervisory skills; must be an innovative and empowering mentor that embraces integrity and ethical practices by providing accurate, responsive, detail-oriented financial results and goals. 

    • Possess high level of personal integrity, good judgment and maturity. 

    • Outstanding analytical and organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize competing and multiple priorities with calm demeanor and sound judgment. 

    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; leader who can build confidence with teams, leadership and external entities; possess exceptional interpersonal skills and be service oriented. 

    • Possess ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

    • Highly engaged, mission-driven and results-oriented, able to build a high-performance team through delegation of responsibility and authority while challenging, motivating, stretching and supporting senior leadership and the finance department.

    • A collaborative and flexible style, with a strong service mentality. Needs to be seen as a team player who is committed to continuous improvement and learning for themselves and their staff. 

    • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies, and guiding investment in people and systems. 

    • Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model; abstract reasoning skills; organizational skills.
