Salary Range: Full-time $60,000-$80,000, Part Time pro-rated proportionally

Job Description for Instructor of Mandarin 

Cate School is currently seeking applications from candidates for multiple Mandarin instructors to cover a maternity leave during the 2024-25 school year. There is a total need for 6 sections of instruction, from Level 1 through 6 where Level 1 is a first-year course , Level 5 is roughly equivalent to Advanced Placement or a first-year college course and Level 6 is equivalent to a heritage speaker advanced language and culture course. These six sections could be one position, though will most likely be split across two positions, either one full time (4 sections) and one part time (2 sections) or two part time (3 sections each). The positions will formally begin August 2024. There is potential for an extended part time role (2 sections) during the 2025-26 school year pending enrollment in the program. 

In addition to instructing Mandarin, this role may include full residential engagement including residential duty on a dorm team and two co-curricular responsibilities. If housing is not an appropriate fit at this time, a day faculty role may also be an option. Day faculty members are also involved in Cate’s residential and co-curricular programs, though to a lesser extent than housed faculty members.

Collaborate

• work closely with course team teachers to deliver consistent, high-quality instruction and collaborate frequently on assessment measures 

• participate in course team, department, school, and parent meetings

• communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and student needs

Teach

• prepare and facilitate learning experiences that help students master content and develop skills as active readers and writers, especially through active inquiry (Modern Languages Department Inquiry Model)

• practice inclusive teaching by creating lessons and instructional moves that accommodate a wide range of students’ learning needs (Inclusive Teaching Model)

• guide and monitor student learning and growth through formative assessment and appropriate feedback

• assign and grade class work, homework, tests, essays, and other assignments in a timely, fair, and consistent manner

• maintain accurate and complete records of students progress and development via the school’s learning management systems (Schoology and Veracross)

• maintain a commitment to continuous professional growth through reflective practice, evaluative feedback, professional development opportunities, and evolving school needs

• Stay up-to-date in developments in education, teaching resources and methods, and incorporate new pedagogical and curricular design practices

In terms of education and experience, applicants for this position will have:

• willingness to adapt to an existing curriculum as well as contribute to the corresponding academic program.

• teaching experience in secondary school and/or university.

• relevant education, such as a BA in Chinese language and Certification for Teaching Chinese to Nonnative Speakers or similar. Advanced degrees preferred, but not required. 

• experience teaching high school Mandarin courses, and an ability to teach across different grade levels

• demonstrated facility with or ability to learn LMS (Schoology, Veracross, etc.)

• demonstrated commitment to / love for working with teenagers as a role model, mentor, advisor
