Westerly School is an independent, non-sectarian kindergarten through 8th grade school focused on whole child education. Through inquiry-based pedagogy and practices, Westerly School strives to recognize and meet the needs of every individual student to ignite within each child a lifelong love of learning as they discover their full and unique potential. Founded in 1991 by a group of parents who wanted to provide an alternative to the Long Beach Unified School District education, Westerly remains the only independent school in Long Beach. Westerly currently enrolls 181 students.
Position Description
Westerly School seeks a dynamic full-time middle school math teacher for the 2024-25 school year beginning August 12, 2024. Ideal candidates for this position will have a strong background in mathematics, a minimum of 3 - 5 years experience as a math teacher through geometry, experience and understanding of differentiated instruction, and a desire to collaborate closely with colleagues.
Responsibilities:
● Demonstrate command of the mathematics content and curriculum including a review of mathematical operations, pre-algebra, algebra one, and geometry.
● Use a variety of developmentally appropriate instructional and assessment methods to meet the needs of all learners and provide varied forms of feedback on learning
● Use technology purposefully in the classroom to enhance learning and provide feedback to students and parents
● Create a classroom environment that promotes an exemplary learning community: enriched by differences and informed through inquiry
● Plan and implement clear, well-thought out lesson plans that connect in-class learning to concepts and real-world situations, and generate enthusiasm and academic excellence in the classroom
● Communicate regularly and frequently with families regarding student learning and class plans ie. weekly newsletter/week at a glance, emails, websites, etc.
● Communicate student success and areas for growth in a timely, clear and effective manner with students, parents/guardians, and middle school team
● Monitor the academic, personal, emotional, and social progress of students
● Understand and appreciate the social, emotional and cognitive development of middle schoolers
● Demonstrate a willingness to be available to students within contractual hours in addition to instructional time
● Serve as a student advisor to a group of middle school students, if needed
● Cultivate a growth mindset in self and students
● Engage with students, colleagues, and parents to foster a sense of community
● Demonstrates commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-bias/anti-racism through the understanding of diverse attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and practices
● Perform customary and typical duties as assigned including teaching a section of fixed workshop
● Fulfill regular administrative tasks including timely completion and correction of attendance, timely grade reporting and completion of progress and report cards including thoughtful and individualized narrative comments
● Prepare adequately for responsibilities to be assumed when absent
● Chaperone and/or help organize class trips/field studies
● Work with Admissions to support appropriate acceptance and placement of students
● Promote and exemplify Westerly’s core values: kindness, adaptability, honesty, responsibility, respect
Qualifications:
● BA, BS, or MA in math or education with an emphasis and proven subject competency in math
● Strong organizational and planning skills
● 3 - 5+ years experience of teaching math, preferably in grades 5 - 8, and differentiating math instruction
● Shows cultural competency and experience incorporating a culturally responsive lens into teaching and learning

Compensation package:
Pay range - $58,000 - $85,000 commensurate with skills and experience
