Temporary .75 or full-time Teaching Position

Fall semester 2024

The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a temporary three-quarter (or possibly full-time) Chemistry And Physics teacher beginning August 15, 2024, and serving through the end of December 2024. This is a sabbatical replacement. This position entails teaching two sections of Chemistry and either one or two sections of Advanced Physics.

A qualified candidate will:

• Have a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physics, or related field
• Be well prepared to teach a Chemistry survey course and an advanced Physics course
• Have experience teaching Science to students at the secondary or college level
• Have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community and be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment
• Have patience, flexibility, and a good sense of humor

Teachers at College Prep work closely with one another, honing and reshaping the curriculum. The College Prep science program is innovative and rigorous and includes three required year-long courses: Physics (in the 9^th grade), Chemistry (in the 10^th grade), and Biology (in the 11th grade). Beyond required courses, the vast majority of our students choose to take one or more science electives. These include Advanced topics in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and semester electives such as Astronomy, Issues in Science, and Forensics. Students use both texts and teacher-produced material in classes. Science teachers work closely with one another as teams for particular courses and across the curriculum.

Candidates should be eager to spend additional time getting to know and help students outside of the classroom. College Prep teachers also take a share of other departmental, committee, and general school responsibilities, mostly during the 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. school day. Faculty at College Prep are compensated according to a step scale based on years of experience that ranges from $72,500/year for teachers with no prior relevant experience to $143,700/year for teachers with 44 years of prior experience. Temporary or Part-time teachers are compensated on the same scale, prorated for their percentage or term of employment.
