Math Specialist and Instructional Coach

(Full-time)

Children’s Day School (CDS) is a co-educational preschool through eighth grade serving over 470 students in the Mission Dolores neighborhood of San Francisco. Spanning two campuses, and home to a diverse community of students, faculty, and families, CDS is a vibrant learning community. CDS is located on a beautiful, secluded half-acre in the Mission near Dolores Park. Our aftercare program employs the use of indoor classrooms, an environmental ed. kitchen, a woodchips area, a climbing structure, a farm and garden (featuring eleven chickens and two sheep!), and a play yard among the largest of independent schools in the city.

We are seeking an experienced, learner-centered, justice-oriented math specialist and instructional coach to support our faculty to deepen their classroom practice related to mathematics instruction broadly, and differentiation more specifically. The Math Specialist and Instructional Coach will focus support on the upper elementary and middle school years (3 -8) during their first year in the role.  The math specialist / instructional coach has 2 different roles within our school:  a content specialist and an instructional coach.

Responsibilities:

Math Content Specialist 

• Function as the math content leader in the school, actively promoting mathematical thinking across the school, not just in math class
• Provide parent education opportunities through various communication tools (eg. Parentsquare, My CDS resource board, admissions events, and open houses) to build confidence in, understanding of,  and support for our math program and approach
• Communicate with students and families to develop a healthy relationship with math learning
• Establish yearly and long-term goals for the math program aligned with the school’s strategic priorities and direction for learning.
• Partner with the Learning Team to develop programming related to math enrichment and support during the school day and after.
• Partner with the Learning Team to review, select, purchase, and onboarding new instructional materials to ensure a current and effective approach that meets the needs of all kinds of learners and our faculty
• Potential for leading math clubs, electives, enrichments

Instructional Coach

• Support teachers in refining their practice so that lessons emphasize the Standards for Mathematical Practice (student behaviors) and are aligned to the Math Teaching Practices (teacher behaviors)
• Collaborate with faculty in designing and implementing lessons and projects that align with our 5 essential teaching practices and core curricula
• Provide individual, division level, and whole faculty development opportunities by observing in classrooms, engaging in coaching cycles, planning whole group learning sessions that build math literacy and teaching practice
• Partner with and coach teachers to differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of all learners, building teacher efficacy with classroom differentiation in math

​​​​​​​Educational Requirements and Desired Skills 

• Bachelor's Degree in education, mathematics or related field (required)
• Master’s Degree in a related field (preferred)
• Coursework and/or experience in instructional coaching 
• Experience teaching mathematics in elementary and middle school
• Strong commitment to building a learning community where the people, culture, and programming reflect the racial, ethnic, economic, and family diversity of San Francisco.
• Deep knowledge of and the ability to guide math curriculum development 
• Experience in supporting and developing the growth and evolution of educators at the individual, team, and whole faculty level, using cycles of coaching and feedback
• A collaborator and thought partner who can inspire and connect faculty to new technologies, tools, and resources related to math learning
• Ability to collect and analyze data to inform practice and communicate learning outcomes 
• Deep experience with differentiation methods and approaches
• Demonstrate the ability to take initiative, work passionately and joyfully, and collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
• Proficiency with digital learning tools
• Excellent interpersonal skills as well as a great sense of humor.

Compensation

Benchmarked to our faculty salary scale depending on experience and educational levels.

$70,000-123,000 on the current scale
