    Bishop O’Dowd High School is seeking excellent candidates for a Career Counselor(3/5th) and Academic Support Liaison(2/5ths).  Bishop O’Dowd High School utilizes a comprehensive, holistic counseling model in support of personal, intellectual, and spiritual growth and success, in support of promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, in support of the school’s mission and charism. The role of Career Counselor, in conjunction with each student’s individual counselor, provides opportunities to connect learning with real-world experiences, through a series of scheduled interactions.This position is a touchpoint for each student and serves as a strong force for improving students' abilities to understand themselves, how they learn, and how they can connect with their individual strengths and interests. This position collaborates with faculty to partner with students, their counselor and their families throughout their four years at O’Dowd and encourages students to gain the most from their educational experience. The Career Counselor reports to the Director of Counseling.

    As the Academic Support Liaison, this position supports students with organizational and strategic tutoring through a one-on-one academic coaching model. The Academic Support Liaison reports to the Director of Academic Support and is a member of the Academic Support team of four people who work collaboratively to support students. Academic Support staff partner with counselors, our Associate Director of Health & Wellness, and administrators to support students’ academic success.

    The successful candidate will possess excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic, and a desire to work with a diverse group of students and their families. The candidate should possess the flexibility, energy and commitment to teamwork that life in a Catholic school requires. We seek someone who possesses both an appreciation for adolescents and a collaborative spirit.

    Essential Responsibilities:

    Career Counselor (3/5ths)

    • Connect with each 9th grade student and orient them to the Naviance platform, goal setting and the combined support from both the comprehensive counselor and career counselor. 

    • Introduce 11th grade class to schoology college counseling page and build out resume support guidance for the class

    • Collaborate with counselors and English teachers to create drop-in opportunities for resume and writing support. 

    • Conceptualize and coordinate Career Day. 

    • Design additional connection points for career exploration, through collaboration with classes, clubs, etc. 

    • Maintain log notes and records as appropriate.

    • Meet with students to support interview basics and strategies. 

    • Collaborate with Alumni Relations to create and facilitate LinkedIn workshops for students both online and in person. 

    • Create and maintain a database of career speakers and internship opportunities.

    • Support students in beginning to build a network with O’Dowd Alumni. 

    • Participate in weekend and/or evening events (e.g., Open House, Navigate O’Dowd, Graduation, etc.), as needed.

    • Develop working knowledge of computer software and improve the skills necessary to effectively use these applications and other software as they pertain to the department. 

    • Coordinate specific program(s) (i.e. Career, Testing) with department members at the discretion of the Director of Counseling and Associate Principal.

    Academic Support Liaison (2/5ths)

    • Provide one-on-one academic support to LD/ADHD students and students on academic probation, and other students (by referral only). 

    • Build rapport with students.

    • Develop and maintain written academic support plans that are shared with the counselor, student, and parents.

    • Log attendance for academic check-ins.

    • Weekly meeting with Counselor for LD/ADHD students and/or Director of Academic Support.

    • Refer students to in-house supports (peer tutoring, SMART sessions, office hours, etc) as needed.

    • Exercise good judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action(s).

    Qualifications for this position

    • Master’s degree and/or related education or experience applicable to the responsibilities of the position. 

    • Experience providing academic support to students in a school setting.

    • Demonstrated understanding of and passion for high school education and adolescent development

    • Proven ability to differentiate access and provide experiences for diverse community needs

    • Ability to foster a safe, inclusive, equitable, belonging, and joyful working environment

    • Has experience authentically engaging with diverse working environments

    • Proven success collaborating with colleagues and innovating practices

    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 

    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing. 

    • Positive attitude, flexible approach, strong interpersonal skills.
