The range is: $1,850 - $2,100 per week

Temporary Elementary School Counselor Job Description

Responsibilities include the following:

Counseling

• Supports individual students on a short-term basis and advise families as needed about psychotherapy outside of school 

• Provides direct service, including crisis counseling, time-limited interventions, and assessment for triage and referral purposes

• Ability to lead small council groups to help students in understanding self and others, conflict resolution, coping skills, peer relationships and effective social skills as needed per class

• Fosters an inclusive, equitable, and diverse learning community 

• Embraces cultural diversity to promote all students' academic, social and emotional development

• Remains current with laws governing confidentiality as they pertain to children and mental health services in independent schools

• Maintain accurate and up-to date confidential records of conversations, meetings and observations 

• Conduct classroom observations of students and monitor students in need during unstructured social times

• Counsels elementary students, parents, and faculty, as needed, regarding emotional and psychological issues related to/impacting school life and academic performance

Parent Connections 

• Attends and participates in meetings with parents, administrators, teachers, and outside student support such as therapists, learning specialists, doctors, etc.  

• Provides direct support services, including crisis counseling, parent education, and providing  outside referrals as needed 

• Provide mental health education to parents of Campbell Hall elementary students as needed

• In collaboration with director of human development, provide presentations on milestones of development and emotional issues impacting their child(ren) to parents at each grade level K-6

Faculty Connections

• Consults with teachers regarding students’ social and emotional needs

• Consults and meets with elementary school principal, director of counseling and director of educational support services regarding student issues and clinical and legal matters pertaining to the mental health of students 

• Meets with elementary student support team to discuss and strategize about students of concern 

• Develops programs designed to heighten faculty understanding and expertise regarding student emotional needs and issues

• Identifies and implements topical programs designed to help students improve their capacity to deal with emotional needs and challenges (in coordination with director of human development)

• Supports faculty with best practices in regards to student’s needs

• Meets weekly with director of counseling, and collaborates with counseling team as needed 

Required Qualifications

• Understands and has experience working within a school community and with its various constituencies – students, parents, faculty, and administrators 

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with student support team 

• Understands the context of Campbell Hall as an ecumenical community

• Understands the developmental needs of 5-13 year old children and the ability to converse with parents and faculty about supporting the needs of individual children

• Experience collaborating and consulting with individual therapists outside of school when appropriate

• Experience with parent consultation and collaboration (face to face or by phone)

• Experience collaborating with teachers, administrators and parents to develop appropriate and effective plans to meet the individual needs of each student

Desired Credentials

Ed.D, Ph.D, or Psy.D in clinical or school psychology preferred, or Master’s Degree in Counseling, LMFT, LCSW, or LPCC with minimum 2 years of working in schools, strongly preferred.
