    Director of College Counseling

    The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time Director of College Counseling for the 2023-24 school year. The Director of College Counseling leads and manages the college counseling office, guiding students and parents/guardians through the admissions process and providing counsel rooted in a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of all aspects of the college admission landscape. The Director serves on the Senior Administrative Team and advises the Head of School and Assistant Head/Academic Dean on curricular and program-related matters as they relate to student preparation for higher education. The Director supervises the Assistant Director of College Counseling and the Office Manager (.5). The Director of College Counseling reports to the Head of School and works closely with other administrative leaders.

    Essential Functions:

    • Advise students about college choices and the application process, counseling adolescents about self-understanding, self-presentation, and making academic and personal choices.
    • Foster effective interpersonal conversations with students, both one-on-one and in workshop and group settings.
    • Work with parents/guardians to include them as informed and supportive partners in the college counseling process.
    • Coordinate and manage the efforts of the Assistant Director of College Counseling and the Office Manager, ensuring that application materials and school documents are sent in a timely manner.
    • Keep abreast of changes in the college application and admission procedures and financial aid programs to determine the implications of these changes for students and school programs.
    • Maintain a strong working knowledge of colleges and universities, including making regular visits to colleges and developing relationships with admission office representatives as appropriate.
    • Serve on the senior administrative team and on other committees as assigned.
    • Support and train faculty in the writing of effective letters of recommendation.
    • Produce and keep current the School Profile.
    • Oversee college counseling office budget.


    • A minimum of six years in some combination of selective college admissions and/or leadership in independent school college counseling.
    • Knowledge of emerging trends, policies, and practices within the college admissions process.
    • Keen emotional intelligence and demonstrated ability to work with students and families from a range of diverse backgrounds.
    • Excellent communication skills, including clear and dynamic writing abilities.
    • Experience managing and mentoring others.
    • Enthusiasm for working with teenagers and in a school community.
    • A bachelor's degree (required); advanced degree is preferred.

    The salary range for this position is $163k- $180.
