High School History Teacher

    de Toledo High School in West Hills, CA, is a vibrant, innovative, and academically-rigorous independent high school community, where intellectual imagination and ethical action are inseparable.  We are seeking an experienced and dynamic History teacher, beginning in August 2020, whose portfolio will primarily center around AP U.S. Government and U.S. History.

    A strong candidate must be an enthusiastic, energetic, and collegial individual who wants to work with high school students in a collaborative and inclusive academic setting.  The de Toledo History Department encourages students to understand the nature and methods of historical inquiry as part of their development as critical thinkers, to learn about accounts of the past in order to expand their perspectives on the present, and to encourage their development as well-informed, curious, and engaged global citizens.

    Responsibilities:

    • Teach up to five classes in the History Department.
    • Demonstrate an overall knowledge of one's discipline(s) to build curriculum in order to reach students’ diverse ability levels and learning styles.
    • Develop curricula and activities to meet academic standards, and design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standards.
    • Think creatively about pedagogy and assessments, and develop original and innovative course offerings that challenge students to think critically about history and their place in the world.
    • Participate in ongoing reflection of lessons, evaluations, curricula, course content, and course materials.
    • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records.
    • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
    • Communicate expectations, criteria for assessment, student progress, and student strengths/weaknesses to parents/guardians and students.
    • Demonstrate high standards of professionalism.
    • Embody the characteristics that the school wishes the students to uphold, especially but not limited to respect, excellence, authenticity, curiosity, hard work, and professionalism.
    • Develop in students the skills, interests, and abilities necessary to be lifelong learners and engaged civic participants.
    • Be flexible, motivated, confident, professional, and eager to evolve as an educator and to work in a highly collaborative environment.
    • Participate in community events and contribute to the school culture.
    • Participate in grade-level activities and school-wide functions.

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s in History; Master’s in History or related field; or M. Ed. with BA in History (or related field) preferred.
    • Minimum three years of experience teaching history to grades 9-12 with at least two years of teaching AP U.S. Government.
    • Ability to teach both introductory and advanced courses in history.
    • Background in world history, non-western history, and/or economics a plus.
    • A passion for history and for the teaching of history.
    • Experience teaching historical research and writing.
    • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication (oral and written) abilities.
    • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with a grade-level team within the department to develop grade-level curriculum that is consistent and coordinated across the four-year History curriculum.
