    About Francis Parker School:

Francis Parker School is a coeducational independent day school in San Diego, California with 1315 students in grades JK-12. Founded in 1912, the school’s mission is “to create and inspire a diverse community of independent thinkers whose academic excellence, global perspective and strength of character prepare them to make a meaningful difference in the world.” Francis Parker School has two campuses in close proximity. One in Mission Hills (Lower School JK-5), and a second in Linda Vista (Middle and Upper School 6-8 and 9-12, respectively).

    Job Description:

Parker is committed to innovating and evolving so that it remains a leader among educational institutions. True to this commitment, Parker is seeking a Data Science Intern with the motivation and desire to help it design and implement systems and processes that will enhance its ability to make data-informed decisions. In pursuit of this goal, the Data Science Intern will lead a summer project to create a data warehouse that integrates with various information sources to serve as the repository and reporting system for performance metrics about academics, admissions, advancement, athletics, financial assistance, personnel, financial operations, and other school key performance indicators (KPIs). Although Parker currently collects and reports these KPIs annually as a member of INDEX, a consortium of independent schools who share information with fellow member schools, it is a manual and time-consuming process. The Data Science Intern will collaborate with leaders from various departments and divisions to create this data warehouse. Technical and other required support will be provided to assist the Data Science Intern as needed.

This full-time seasonal position will start as soon as possible through August. There is a potential to continue after the summer on a part-time basis.

    Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Collaborate with various department and division leaders to understand the definitions, information sources, and other details about the KPIs Parker reports.

Collaborate with the Technology department to create a database that will function as the repository (i.e., data warehouse) for these KPIs.

Collaborate with the Technology department to integrate (via an API whenever possible) various source information systems (e.g., Blackbaud Financial Edge for financial data, Paylocity for personnel data) with the data warehouse.

Establish processes to extract and load the necessary KPI data from the various source information systems.

Develop the method to programmatically calculate various KPIs.

Create reports, charts, and graphs to display the KPIs.

Provide technical documentation and instructions for using, maintaining, and improving the data warehouse.

    Qualifications:

    • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university studying Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Data Analytics, or a related field
    • 1 to 2 years of work or volunteer experience
    • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and/or the Google Workplace Suite (Docs, Sheets, and Slides) – familiarity with data analysis tools like PowerBI a plus
    • Familiarity with data warehousing architectural concepts (i.e., data structures, databases, and information visualization) – hands-on ETL experience using integration tools like Boomi a plus
    • Proven ability to extract, clean, and report data using SQL or other query language – knowledgeable in programming/scripting languages like R/Python a plus
    • Ability to synthesize data into meaningful reports
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Self-starter with the ability to plan, schedule, and work independently
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

    Salary and Benefits:

This is an hourly full-time seasonal position (Working hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am 4:30 pm), paying $25/hour (undergraduate) or $30/hour (postgraduate). This position is not eligible for benefits.
