    Bentley School is a K-12 co-educational, independent day school located on two campuses in Oakland (K-8) and Lafayette (9-12), California.     The Director of Athletics oversees the school’s athletic programming and facility rentals and is responsible for the administration of the athletic program in grades 6-12. This position reports to the Assistant Head of School and serves on the school’s Leadership Team. The Director of Athletics is responsible for leading, developing, and growing the athletic program while representing Bentley to the wider community. Bentley is searching for a visionary leader and culture builder who has shown success in building successful athletic programming that allows students to grow as athletes, leaders, and people.

    This is a full-time position that requires regular evening and weekend commitments for athletic events, meetings, and other responsibilities.

    Responsibilities (including but are not limited to:)

    Program Leadership and Development:

                   Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive athletic program that meets the needs of a diverse student body.

                   Ensure alignment of the athletic program with the school’s mission, values, and educational goals.

                   Promote a positive culture of sportsmanship, teamwork, inclusion, and personal growth among students, coaches, and families.

                   Stay current with trends, best practices, and regulations in youth athletics and ensure compliance with applicable local, state and national athletic associations.

                   Conduct regular coaches meetings, and observe coaches regularly to mentor, grow, and retain the strongest coaches.

    Management:

                   Hire, supervise, and evaluate coaching staff, fostering professional growth and ensuring adherence to school and athletic policies.

                   Supervise, support, mentor and evaluate assigned staff in the Athletic Office including Assistant Directors, Athletic Trainer, and coaches.

                   Recruit coaches for all sports, coordinate orientations and onboarding, and manage contract execution and performance in partnership with the HR department.

                   Oversee the coaching certifications for all members of the staff and provide yearly opportunities for growth.

    Operations:

                   Direct and evaluate the athletic opportunities at the school.

                   Oversee scheduling, logistics, and transportation for practices, games, and tournaments.

                   Ensure proper maintenance, usage, reservation and inventory of athletic facilities, fields, and equipment.

                   Develop and manage the athletic department budget, including oversight of fundraising initiatives and procurement processes.

                   Coordinate with other school administrators to integrate athletics with academic and extracurricular programming.

                   Oversee all recognition events for student athletes.

                   Coordinate all purchasing of uniforms, equipment, supplies, and medical supplies.

    Student-Athlete Support:

                   Serve as a mentor and advocate for student-athletes, promoting their academic and personal development alongside their athletic goals.

                   Participate in various aspects of student life at Bentley such as advising clubs, coaching, or working with student organizations. Be an active member of all aspects of student life.

                   Oversee and coordinate all areas of responsibility within the 6-12 athletic program and 9-12 life fitness programs.

                   Address concerns or conflicts involving student-athletes, coaches, and families with professionalism and fairness.

                   Create and enforce policies that prioritize student safety, including injury prevention and adherence to medical protocols.

                   Oversight of the dissemination of information regarding student health updates to all coaching staff.

                   Communicate regularly with parents on promoting athletic programs.

                   May be required to teach or assist in teaching physical education or life skills as needed.

                   Counsel with faculty/deans regarding any student athlete academic difficulties.

    Community Engagement:

                   Act as the primary representative of the school’s athletic program.

                   Foster relationships with parents, alumni, and local organizations to enhance support for the athletic program.

                   Organize and promote athletic events, tournaments, and celebrations, encouraging community involvement and school spirit, working in collaboration with the Director of Communications.

                   Oversee the rental of facilities, collaborating with other departments.

    Collaboration:

     

                   Work closely with K-8/US Division Directors and faculty to minimize conflict with the academic program.

                   Oversee the Athletic Department website.

                   Coordinate with the Director of Communications on promoting the athletic program including preparing articles and newsletters to promote the athletic program.

                   Coordinate hiring with the Director of Human Resources.

                   Coordinate school enrollment and eligibility with the Admissions Director for student athletes.

                   Maintain and create student athlete handbooks, coaching handbooks/guides, and athletic policies.

                   Attend faculty and administrative team meetings as directed.

     

    Administration

     

                   Work as a member of the senior administrative team.

                   Supervise Assistant Athletic Directors, Athletic Trainer and coaches.

                   Represent Bentley in the CIF, NCS, BAC, and BCL East; know and follow all regulations of these organizations.

                   Develop, organize, supervise, and evaluate the school’s physical education, intramural and interscholastic athletic programs.

                   Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    Required:

                   Bachelor’s degree in sports management, education, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

                   Minimum of 5 years of experience in athletic administration or a related leadership role, preferably in an educational setting.

                   Strong understanding of youth sports regulations, compliance requirements, and best practices.

                   Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

                   Proven ability to foster collaboration and build relationships among diverse stakeholders.

                   Certification in CPR/First Aid (current or able to attain certification within 30 days of hire)

                   Holds professional membership in the State Athletic Director organization

    Preferred:

                   Experience working in an independent school environment.

                   Coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level.

                   Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in athletics.

    Working Conditions:

                   May work in an office, gym, classroom, or outdoor environment with moderate to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperature conditions, and inclement weather conditions.

    Physical Requirements:

                   Mobility to work in and around standard Bentley offices, buildings and outdoor areas.  Ability to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, grasp, and make repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties.

                   Ability to climb or handle heavy athletic equipment.

                   Strength and stamina to perform medium to heavy physical work; to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 50 pounds or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.

                   Vision to inspect assigned work areas and to read printed materials.

                   Standing and walking for extended periods of time.

     

    Pay Range:

     

    Bentley uses a competitive salary scale, which considers experience, education, and skill level. The starting salary expected for this position ranges from $100,000 - $150,000, commensurate with years of experience
