    BUSINESS MANAGER

    The Business Manager at the Institute for Applied Tinkering (IAT) (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) is a member of the Administrative Team which oversees the financial and business operations of the IAT and its programs—Brightworks (K-12 independent school), Tinkering School (camps program)—and related activities. The Business Manager reports to the Executive Director, and works closely with the Finance and HR Managers and the Program Directors. 

    Key to this role is developing and overseeing efficient business and operational practices for the administrative level of the organization, and to ensure alignment of practices across programs.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Business Operations (oversee/manage)

      • Telecommunications services and contracts

      • Cyber security and PCI compliance

      • School and camp licensing

      • Insurance policies across programs

      • Risk Management

      • Partner and space sublet contracts

      • Trademark enforcement

      • Non-profit legal compliance

      • Physical asset management

      • Organization-wide policies related to the above

      • And similar…

    • Finances  (depending on experience)

      • Perform some financial functions as arranged with Finance Manager, such as acting as backup on key systems, performing light bookkeeping, etc.

      • Support tuition receivables by performing outreach and other followup to ensure tuition payment schedules are adhered to

    • Human Resources (depending on experience)

      • Work with Human Resources Manager to ensure timely completion of staff handbooks

      • Manage employment contracts

      • Perform backup HR duties as arranged with HR Manager


    • Key Administrative Functions

      • Work closely with program directors and Executive Director to align business and operational practices across the organization

      • Weekly leadership/staff meetings and daily staff communications onsite

      • Staff liaison with legal team


    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or equivalent experience

    • Minimum 5 years experience in business operations

    • Ability to help build systems and processes, working with others, in a growing organization

    • Willingness to roll up sleeves to perform basic administrative functions, as well as operate at a more senior level in overseeing critical aspects of business operations

    • Comfort working in a highly collaborative and somewhat fluid environment

    • Ability to represent the organization well with parents, partners, vendors, etc.

    • Nonprofit and/or private school experience is preferred but not required

    • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and relate well to students, parents, staff, faculty, and others

    • Must be highly analytical and able to multitask and complete projects in a timely manner

    • The ability to be creative, seeking solutions to enable rather than deny

    • Detail oriented and organized; excellent project management skills

    • Ability to employ flexibility and creativity in the execution of duties

    • Must be able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines


    Requirements

    • Work year of twelve months

    • Full time scheduled work week of no less than forty hours

    • This position is Exempt from the State of California overtime laws

    • All work days are onsite

    • Up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination, including receiving a booster shot, as a condition of employment, absent qualifying exemptions in accordance with applicable laws.



    Wages/Benefits

    This is a full time, exempt (salaried) position, which is eligible for the Institute for Applied Tinkering’s full benefits package including: medical, dental, retirement, life and AD&D, and tuition remission. Salary is set based on industry benchmarks for the position and the candidate’s experience.
