    Position Purpose

    Reporting to the Head of School and a key member of the School’s Executive Management Team, the Chief Business Officer (CBO) provides professional leadership and fiscal expertise that guides the financial stewardship of the School. The CBO directs the financial management, business operations, human resources, information technology, and facilities teams in the organization.

    Essential Functions

    Financial Management

    • Collaborate with Executive Management Team members to develop and validate School and departmental key performance indicators 

    • Deliver thoroughly vetted solutions designed to ensure the success of the School’s mission by leveraging the school’s financial resources

    • Oversee the work of the Controller to assure that all regularly scheduled financial operations are effectively managed and completed

    • Deliver a clean annual audit to the Board and community by partnering with an outside independent audit firm

    • Ensure thoroughness and accuracy in all forecasting and reporting, including, but not limited to the Statement of Financial Position; audit requirements; forecasting & modeling of capital expenditure and operating budgets

    • Manage  financial activities, including budget preparation and control, accounting, payroll, purchasing, and business planning and management

    • Oversee the administration of the school’s endowment as directed by the Finance Committee

    • Design, document and implement internal financial reporting systems, financial controls and management information systems. Develop and implement systems and processes to establish and maintain secure recordkeeping

    • Coordinate the preparation of reports of disbursements, special analyses, and information reports for school administration and the board; present recommendations for changes and/or improvements, monetary controls and adherence to the budget

    • Manage the school’s tuition assistance program

    Board Support

    • Serve as an active member of the Finance and Audit Committees

    • Work closely with Committee chairpersons to prepare presentations to the Board (including agendas, materials and presenting at meetings)

    Human Resources

    • Manage the School’s Human Resources Manager and associated HR functions

    • Oversee the initiation, revision, implementation and management of the School’s personnel policies and procedures, employee handbook, and personnel forms 

    • Ensure effective compliance with applicable employment regulations

    • Maintain secure, confidential human resource related files and records

    • Supervise administration of payroll and employee benefit programs and ensure effective and timely communication to interested stakeholders

    • Counsel administrators and employees to resolve personnel issues

    • Consult with legal counsel, as necessary, to minimize potential liability


    • Work closely with Director of Technology and the Technology Team to maximize technological resources while limiting expenditures for the school community 

    • Liaison with the senior management team to assure that technology resources are adequately planned and financially resourced


    • Ensure compliance with school policies and procedures and local, state and federal regulations

    • Evaluate and/or negotiate for the purchase of goods and services in coordination with the Controller and Department Heads

    • Oversee and manage the school’s property and casualty, health and liability insurance


    Facilities Management

    • Manage and oversee physical plant management, maintenance and janitorial services, phone systems, security

    • Supervise Facilities Director 

    Other Responsibilities

    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School and Finance Committee/Board

    • Member of school Accreditation team with primary responsibility for Financial and Human Resources reporting

    Qualifications and Qualities Sought

    • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA and/or CPA preferred

    • 10-plus years of financial and business management and leadership in a non-profit or for-profit organization

    • Experience in an independent school management role preferred

    • Working knowledge of business accounting policies, procedures, practices and software programs

    • Experience in budget development ($5M to $10M), expense management and variance analytics

    • Experience in human resources management, employee benefits and policy creation and administration

    • Demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically and creatively

    • Ability to supervise and manage multiple staff, functions and activities

    • Strong communications skills (both written and verbal); ability to communicate well with varied audiences
