    Ojai Valley School is a pre-kindergarten to grade 12 independent boarding and day school located on two campuses in Ojai, California.  The Lower Campus serves students in grades PK-8 and the Upper Campus serves students in grades 9-12.

    Summary of Position

    Ojai Valley School seeks an enthusiastic Director of Development to lead the school’s annual and capital giving.  The Director of Development will report to the Director of Advancement & Admission and work closely with the school President/CEO, Heads of School and members of the Board of Trustees to strengthen philanthropy in support of the School’s academic, co-curricular and residential programs.  The Director of Development is a highly visible and important leadership position.  The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of fundraising experience, the ability to develop positive relationships with major donors, parents and alumni, and the confidence and creativity to shape and direct our fundraising efforts.

    The Director will join the Advancement team at an exciting time in the school’s 110-year-old history.  The school is nearing the completion of an ambitious Strategic Plan and a successful $16-million capital campaign to restore the Upper Campus following the devastating Thomas Fire.  Future campaign goals include construction of a high school gymnasium, construction of a new entrance and administrative building at the Lower Campus, and securing grants in support of the school’s environmental sustainability initiatives.

     Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  The ideal candidate will:

    • Work with School leadership to set campaign goals and strategies.
    • Identify and cultivate donors while accurately communicating information about the School’s strategic plans and its academic and co-curricular programs with a goal of sustaining and increasing philanthropy.
    • Lead the Annual Fund, including but not limited to developing print and electronic communications and organizing special events in collaboration with the Advancement team and School leaders.
    • Work closely with the Director of Advancement and School leadership to oversee donor research, cultivation, solicitation, closure of major gifts, and follow-up.
    • Support the Board’s Development Committee, preparing reports and minutes, and driving future actions.
    • Lead and collaborate on grant writing with a goal of securing funds for existing and future School programs and community partnerships.
    • Participate in the review and editing of the School’s Annual Report and other communications.
    • Use Generations database and other sources to update parent, alumni and foundation records and conduct research to identify prospective donors.
    • Collaborate with the President/CEO, the Director of Advancement, and members of the Advancement team on donor identification and outreach.
    • Strengthen alumni engagement and deepen the prospective donor pipeline.
    • Work with the Database and Annual Giving Manager to track gifts and ensure proper recognition.
    • Work with the Communications staff to keep School constituencies informed, excited, and positively supportive of the School.

    Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience in fundraising; preference will be given to individuals who have worked in development or alumni relations at an independent school, particularly in a boarding school environment.  Experience in event planning and coordination, international travel and/or experience working with constituents in a diverse global community, and the ability to multitask, take direction, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment are essential to this position.
