Are you creative and collaborative, and love learning with Middle School students?

Yavneh Day School is seeking a long-term substitute for a middle school English teacher, starting mid-August 2017.

    About Yavneh

Yavneh Day school is an independent Jewish day school in Los Gatos, CA. Our student-centered approach to education provides opportunities for students to focus on areas of interest. Honesty, compassion and emphasis on the positive are hallmarks of the school's approach to life and learning.

    Our Curriculum

The Yavneh curriculum surpasses current standards by going deeper and giving students more opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge in ways that are meaningful for them. Teachers are constantly collaborating with each other, integrating subject matter, and adapting lessons to the students’ interests which yields a rich, diverse curriculum, and inspires students to achieve their full potential.

As an English teacher you will explore literature, expository and creative writing with your students in ways that help them grapple with universal themes. Examples of previous projects are:

    • After reading a utopic vision novel (The Giver), students created their own utopian society, writing up a set of rules and mocking up scenes with pictures, misc. art supplies, or on a computer.
    • At the end of a science fiction unit, students wrote their own original science fiction short stories with proper character development, then fabricated artifacts that the main characters would have used.
    • After studying the Biblical Book of Esther, students wrote and rehearsed their own play to put the story in modern times to pull out some of the more relevant meanings of the story. The play was performed for the entire student body.

You are: creative, flexible, collaborative, responsive to the needs of children, a good listener, dynamic, caring, receptive, open, and bring your own amazing ideas to the team.

    Specific requirements and expectations

    • At least three years of classroom experience, with a demonstrated focus on English education.
    • Bachelor's degree in English Education (Single Subject Teaching Credential in English, Master's Degree preferred.)
    • An effective Yavneh middle school teacher has a thorough knowledge of cognitive and social-emotional development, uses a variety of teaching techniques, incorporates technology into the classroom, establishes positive relationships with students, communicates with parents, collaborates with colleagues, initiates professional development, supports the mission, serves outside the classroom and adheres to professional standards and models integrity and respect.

    Compensation and Perks

    • Salary competitive and based on experience and qualifications
    • Awesome, mission-driven colleagues
    • A strong sense of community, with people who truly care about the social, emotional and academic growth of the students
    • Supportive, involved families and strong parent association

This middle school English position is a long-term substitute position, starting in August and ending at the earliest in December.
