Addressing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

  • SOSHR Webinar
The SOS webinar on September 24 presented by Myra Creighton was so informative that we felt the need to add an additional discussion on ADA.

An employee often misses work. A student struggles with failing grades. A teacher grapples with behavioral issues. Is anyone responsible? Until Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, independent schools were not required to address disability issues. However, that no longer is the case.

Learning Objectives:
• Trends and recent cases in the law as they relate to people with disabilities. (Bipolar / Mental Illness /  Migraines  / Domestic Violence)
• Examining the complexity of the issues, and discuss best practices in dealing with an aggressive student, parent, or employee.
• Can you  terminate an employee who is permanently disabled and can no longer perform the essential job functions?
• Do Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protections apply to all employees immediately, or must they be employed with the company for a certain amount of time first?
